Initial history:-
According to Roman historian Tsets, the Church of the Holiest byzantine city of Acropolis was established at the same place where two churches were built before that.
Roman King Konstantin (337–272) changed the name of the city in the fourth century and moved to the city of the capital of the Roman Empire. Konstantin wanted to make this city so that people could forget Rome.
First came Sophia in 360, and Konstantin’s son, Konstantina, was opened, but in 404 he was burned during the riots.
After that Theodosius II rebuilt it in 405, but it was once again burned in the riots of 532. Some of the remains of the burnt building are in the garden of the existing mosque.
After a few days of burning in the riots, King Justin decided to rebuild it, and so the church was built which remained the world’s largest church for the next several hundred years.
Justinian wanted to make this building more spectacular than ever, a cathedral that was a clear declaration and symbol of the power and resistance of the Roman Empire.
Justinian did not carry any clothes for him, things were sent from Africa, Asia and Europe to build this building. According to one legend, its doors were made from the pieces of the boat of Hazrat Noah.
By doing so, Justinian wanted to become Hazrat Suleiman, who built the first church in Jerusalem. When he first entered Sofia, he was said to have been excited to say, “I beat you, Suleiman.” ‘
For the construction of this cathedral or church, Justinian has been the best architect of the time. These experts completed it in less than six years.
Whether this strong and mysterious building of Sofia was covered in the city scene and its 33-meter-long dome was the world’s tallest dome, 55 meters above the ground, but 26 years later, it was buried in an earthquake.
The king immediately ordered the repair. This time, among many other techniques, one technique was to create 40 thin columns to lose weight on the dome’s round beam. After that, they had to solve the problem of how to make a round dome on a square basis.
The solution was to add some of the columns to the square base that are located in places that are very important for weight lifting.
These columns moved the weight of the circle under the dome to four points, which changed the entire structure from one circle to square.
Also, the dome was used with very light and thin objects, which caused hundreds of bean idols to be burnt, and the dome of Saint Sophia was seen to be smothering from the night.
Victoria Hammond writes in her book, “The Queen of Haven” that the sunlight comes in as the day rises. The light inside the building is like a light that makes the golden mosaic glow, it seems that there are no walls and creates a mysterious atmosphere that is unremarkable.
Attacks:
Buildings do not have to withstand earthquakes, weather and natural disasters like the passing. No matter how strong their foundations and structures are, they often become victims of human emotions and desires, especially buildings that become symbols like The Sufis.
Constantinople was not only important in defence, but was one of the richest and most important cities in the world and whether Sufi was its spiritual center or heart.
For centuries, roman Catholic world and byzantine empire have been in conflict on the basis of religion. Finally, for Western invaders, Constantinople became a city that was difficult to stop from wanting to achieve.
In 1204, when European invaders attacked the city, the war between the eastern and the Moghrabi groups of Christianity destroyed the city.
Whether Sufia was a Catholic church for a very short period of time, the consequences of the actions of the invaders were far and wide, directly responsible for the destruction of Christianity in the East.
A shelter:
By 1452 the Byzantine or Eastern Roman empire was reduced to Constantinople only, although the city was strong in defense, but it was a Christian island surrounded by the Ottoman Empire of Muslim Turks.
Turkish leader Sultan Muhammad decided to destroy the city’s defence and on 22 April 1453, the Turkish army went to the coast of Constantinople. 5000 Byzantine army faced 200,000 Ottoman army Women, children, the elderly and the sick took shelter behind the great gates of Aya Sophia.
Mehmet or Muhammad Fateh continuously bombed the city for 53 days. He had the most modern artillery in the world. ‘
On May 29, 1453, the strong and high walls of Constantinople were finally broken. Western historical tradition shows that the invading army entered the church and the Christians were re-arrested and killed and enslaved, while the Eastern historical tradition says that the refugees were given life there.
While Sultan Muhammad himself expressed his concern over the destruction of the city, he said, “How wonderful a city was looted and destroyed.” And so the last form of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine world, came to its end.
Become a capital:
For Constantinople, it was the beginning of a new chapter in history. The city became Istanbul which became a Muslim city and the capital of the Ottoman Empire of Sultan Muhammad.
This time, it was his way of saving the byzantine construction. The cathedral building became a mosque. Instead of any basic change in the building, a mine was built in every corner of it.
Whether the names of Allah, the Prophet of Islam and their Prophets were revealed within Sufia. The image and artist associated with Christianity was hidden from plaster or Islamic decorations, but the most important change was the construction of the mahrab so that Muslims could turn to the Kuban and pray.
In the 20th century, the identity of Saint Sophia changed once again and it became a museum.
Over time Istanbul, which was conquered, destroyed and rebuilt many times by both the East and the West, turned into a city with rich Asian and European influence and influence, a city where many cultures of the world are united and developed.
And for 900 years, a church, a mosque for 500 years, a museum for a very short period of time, and now the building of the Once Again Mosque, the Aya Sophia building is still standing there with full strength and glory.
2020:
After a long period of 86 years, the important building of the Byzantine period and one of the world’s greatest historical heritage, Aya Sophia, has become a place of worship again and the first Friday prayer that was read in it has brought much excitement to the citizens of Istanbul. In 1453, when the strong and high walls of Constantinople were broken, the city became Istanbul, the cathedral building became a mosque and a mine was built in every corner of the building instead of any fundamental change.
According to roman historian Tsets, the Church of the Holiest byzantine city of Acarpolis was established at the same place where two churches were built before that.
